Kevin lives on 50 acres in a rural area and had been thinking about getting off the grid for four or five years. In 2023, he made the leap.
“For me, the goal was to be autonomous. I wasn’t doing it to save money,”

The Briggs & Stratton Energy Solutions AmpliPHI 3.8kWh batteries are housed in two weather-resistant BOSS cabinets. And, since Kevin wanted to retain his property’s rural look, the solar panels and battery cabinets were placed 30 and 10 yards from his home, respectively. Small bushes provide a bit of cover to hide the installation.
Ben Loyola, owner of Loyola Enterprises Inc., worked with Kevin to become energy independent. Loyola started his business in 1991 after retiring from the U.S. Navy as a captain and began installing solar and battery systems in 2008. To date, his company has completed nearly 50 green energy projects for residential, industrial and federal government clients.
“We used the weather resistant NEMA 3R rated cabinet that houses the AmpliPHI batteries and an all-in-one inverter. The cabinets with the ground mount solar array worked well with the open landscape setting and kept all the equipment off of and out of the home.”

Even though Kevin’s primary goal wasn’t a financial return, he is selling his surplus power to Central Virginia Electric Cooperative.
“They give us a credit for what we send to them. It’s interesting because you can see the accumulated balance on your bill and then we’ll get a check in the mail,”

The installation took four days of onsite work and was commissioned in June of last year.
“Once it was all set up, it’s pretty slick and really simple. Now that we’re used to having it around, I don’t even think about it. We have a comfort level knowing we don’t have to depend on the utility for power.”
