Colorado State University recently released its prediction for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season, forecasting 17 named storms, including 9 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes. Based on this active outlook, the University is urging coastal residents to begin their storm preparations early.

The season officially begins June 1, making now the ideal time to plan for severe weather. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends assembling an emergency preparedness kit and creating a family communication plan in case of evacuation.

FEMA recommends gathering:

  • Jugs of water – one gallon per person for several days
  • Nonperishable food and a manual can opener
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio or NOAA Weather Radio
  • Cell phone, charger and battery chargers
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Dust mask
  • Whistle – to signal for help
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape
  • Moist towelettes and garbage bags – for sanitation
  • Area maps

Plan for Backup Power
